Pittsburgh Like a Local
Author Alexander Rigby has lived in Pittsburgh since 2008 when he began college in the city. We caught up with the writer extraordinaire recently for some inside tips on what makes Pittsburgh a great place to live.
What kept you in Pittsburgh after you graduated?
I stayed because it’s a beautiful city that has a lot to offer – in terms of job opportunities, great dining options, fun nightlife, culture, entertainment venues. And it is relatively LGBT friendly.
Are there any good gay bars in town?
My favorite queer bar has to be 5801 Video Lounge in Shadyside. Although I must admit I don’t go to gay bars in the city that often. Nothing against them, but I actually find it more enjoyable to go out in the Lawrenceville neighborhood of the city, where I live. Most of the bars here are gay-friendly, even if they aren’t officially labeled as gay bars. I can dance with my boyfriend at Belvedere’s, Brillobox, or Remedy without having to worry about anything. Belvedere’s has a great 80s night dance party, Brillobox puts on monthly ‘Bro Club’ parties that are very popular with the city’s gays, and Remedy tends to play great pop music often. My friends and I love dancing to Robyn.
