Haruru Falls is a small residential settlement, located about three kilometres inland from its larger neighbour, Paihia. But, in the days of early European settlement, it was the scene of many firsts.

    Living Area

Haruru Falls was New Zealand’s first river port and an aramoana (sea road or ocean path) for the inland Maori tribes and for the early vision boats. HMS Dromedary was one, Karere (meaning messenger’) another. Missionaries once saw 60 to 100 canoes pulled up on the mud banks. The Maori had a small settlement here where they traded. At that time there were nine kaianga (villages) between Haruru and Waitangi. Close to the Bay of Islands this region offers spectacular views and scenic trails.

    Luxurious Rooms

Close at hand  is the bustling seaside town of  Paihia, right in the heart of the Bay of Islands, offering superb golden sand beaches that are safe for swimming and sun bathing. Here you will find a wide range of recreational activities including sailing, swimming with the dolphins, or sea kayaking around the 144 islands that make up the Bay of Islands. This town is rich in history and culture which is also evident in nearby Waitangi---a place where Maori and European residents mix with visitors from all around the world. Paihia is proud to be recognised as 'the Jewel of the Bay of Islands'.
