A vacation mecca off the sun-scorched coast of Africa, this Spanish-owned island is steadily becoming more sleek and seductive with new five-star resorts, international restaurants, private yacht charters, and other attractions of interestt to lesbian and gay travelers. No wonder Gran Canaria is favored by gay and straight tourists looking for a break in the sun.
Passport Magazine, the site for travel, culture, style, adventure and romance, recently published an article by Stuart Haggas on Gay Gran Canaria. He reports...
Gran Canaria has year-round sunshine, a popular gay nude beach, clothing-optional gay complexes, and dozens of gay bars in the twin resort areas of Playa del Ingles and Maspalomas. These factors altogether affirm Gran Canaria’s status as an affordable gay hotspot, attracting gay men and lesbians from places including the UK, Germany, and Scandinavia with the promise of cheap fun and sun.
In recent years, however, Gran Canaria has begun to challenge this status quo by offering upscale options for those happy to spend more money.
The oceanfront area west of the glorious Dunas de Maspalomas nature reserve, with its infamously frisky gay nude beach, has seen development on a grand scale. Much of this is focused around the manicured promenade of Meloneras, which is lined with new bars, restaurants, boutiques, and lavish resort behemoths.
Sailing in style. Prices start at €95 per person for an 8-hour yacht experience including lunch. When you consider that it can cost €30 just for use of a sun-lounger on the famous beaches of the French Riviera, this demonstrates that Gran Canaria can be both aspirational and affordable.
