OUT There Starts Here | James Does Bali
Dispatch received recently from jet-lagged James on his recent Bali visit 20 years after his first tryst.
“Before I left for Bali, I read the Rainbow Rambler’s story about beaches, bars and boutiques around my destination, Seminyak. I was looking forward to seeing places I had visited two decades ago and exploring some new hotspots.
The Rainbow Tourism info regarding the tiny gay spot on 66 Beach is spot on. However, it is very small with few chairs, and I did not think the vibe very interesting at the times I went by. But worth a visit, especially for sunset sessions. Go early to get a chair.
Bars on the gay strip are correct in the article. I stayed at Favhotel, as the pink facade accommodation is right there as well. I found a lively nightlife, similar to my scene back in San Jose.
The Zen for Men and Phil’s Place listings are mentioned in stories about Batu Belig Beach, just above Seminyak. I enjoyed visiting with fellow boutique hoteliers and loved the Zen pool located 60 m from the beach.
Many beach club style pool bars and restaurants exist along this strip of shoreline, with varied atmospheres for those wanting music and sun without sand. Ask the locals for the daily hot spots and best time to visit!
I enjoyed combining beach with an inland trip for several nights to Ubud, a center of arts, crafts, local dance, massage and of course…ricefields. From that location, a day trip to experience the elephant temple, the water temple and the volcano region with hot springs called Mt. Batur is a must do!
Happy Bali Bliss,
James, San Jose
James is celebrating 30 years in gay travel as Colours. The accommodation brand started as “An Inn for the Avant Garde” in 1983 (Colours Key West) then morphed from a B&B in South Florida to Colours Oasis Resort in San Jose (Colours Costa Rica) where he calls home base.
