Meredith House was built in 1853 by J. A. Graham on land purchased from Charles Meredith, husband of noted colonial artist and poet, Louisa Anne Meredith.The first occupier was Gordon Burgess who named it Laughton House after Laughton in Essex England, from where he came. Subsequently he married a Miss Cope, a cousin of Louisa Meredith who ran it as a Girls Grammar School, it was rumoured to once house ‘ladies of the night’ and for a period it was a maternity hospital.

From its elevated position overlooking the town, Meredith House & Mews Swansea accommodation is a short walk to white sandy beaches, stylish cafés, and award-winning restaurants. Meredith House and Mews has provided accommodation for visitors to Swansea for over 100 years. Extensively renovated, it now offers every comfort for the discerning traveller including free WiFi and internet access. Adjacent to Meredith House are four mews-style studio apartments, three of which have spas. All have an en-suite bathroom, three studios have queen size bed plus a single bed, comfortably accommodating two adults and a child; and the forth studio has a queen bed.

Their award-winning full cooked breakfast is included in the tariff for all accommodation at Meredith House, including the Mews Studios.

Situated on a hill in the centre of the historic seaside town of Swansea, overlooking the Freycinet Peninsula and Great Oyster Bay, Meredith House is a Heritage Tasmania classified home, built in 1853 and furnished with local craftsman-made red cedar furniture and family antiques. Facilities such as their lounge and well stocked library are shared by House and Mews guests. Meredith House and Mews also offers a guest laundry, a guest barbecue area, and free Wifi & internet access.

Heritage Decor

The majority of their rooms are Queen Bedrooms, but they also have a Twin (single beds) room, and a Family room which comfortably accommodates two adults and two children.

Facilities include ensuites, minibars, Free WiFi access, Flat screen TVs, direct dial telephone, tea and coffee making facilities, and complimentary port.

Comfortable Bedrooms

All studios in the Mews feature wide screen LCD TV, complimentary WiFi access, a small kitchenette with microwave, electric frypan, fridge, toaster, crockery and cutlery, with a dining area adjoining your own private verandah and garden access. In front of each studio is a parking space for your convenience. Mews guests join us in the dining room each morning for our award-winning full cooked breakfast which is also included.

Put your feet up and relax in their tranquil garden, set on approximately one acre, including lawn areas, fruit trees, a vast assortment of native and introduced plants, roses and shrubs. Meredith House garden also features a barbecue area with facilities for House and Mews guests.
