Located near historic Russell in the beautiful Bay of Islands, Orongo Bay Homestead is a historic restored homestead set in seventeen acres of lawns, native bush, and natural spring, offering private facility accommodations, Finnish sauna, plunge tub, private swimming lake, guest lounge and guest laundry facility.
Orongo Bay Homestead was built for Irish born, naturalised American Commercial Agent James G White. Today the impressive, fully-restored, two-storey wooden Homestead is an exclusive, historic country residence with fine wine and renowned hospitality.
The Homestead restoration was completed by 1990, after research through the Historic Places Trust, and discreetly includes every modern facility, and some older treasures including a hand-carved Victorian chaise longue and even a vintage Austrian grand piano for musical guests. Organic certification and a healthy regard for luxury, promise an experience unmatched anywhere. Even the water for the guests and gardens is drawn from natural springs among native bush.
Owners and hosts Chris Wharehinga Swannell and Michael Hooper invite you to share the peace and comfort of their natural haven. A sheltered sun-facing verandah looks over sweeping front lawns across Orongo Bay to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds where Maori and European first formally agreed to live together in Aotearoa, New Zealand. Nearby Russell was the nation’s first Capital. Chris, who is part Maori, can share with you his people’s history.
The Homestead offers three guest rooms. For ultimate comfort the pillows are soft duck-down and feather, the generous beds are orthopaedic quality, and duvets are purely natural wool and cotton.
All rooms have en-suite bathrooms with robes, fluffy towels, hair-dryers, and native plant skin care creams. All rooms have a fridge, flat screen DVD/CD systems, and complimentary fruit bowl on arrival. Massage is available on request, and the natural spring water is free for guests. Rooms have access to an extensive CD and DVD library.
A bakehouse breakfast is served until 10am. Breakfast offers a selection of home baked breads, healthy low-fat, flavoursome muffins, and lighter-then-air, golden croissants baked daily. The juice is freshly-squeezed when suitable fruit is in season. Luxurious original recipe healthy muesli (Granola) is made here, and Homestead organic preserves and fruit also start off your day. They can accommodate gluten-free or other dietary restrictions with appropriate prior notice. The tasty muffins, like much of the luxurious food, avoid fats, refined sugar, white flour, and high-cholesterol ingredients, yet through art and science may be rich in the highest quality chocolate, fruits, and flavours. Artificial flavourings or colourings and preservatives are not permitted in any Homestead cuisine. A true gourmet breakfast offering!
When you start the day with such nutritionally-balanced luxury, you will have enough energy to enjoy all of the outdoor activities offered in this region.
