Pretty much wherever you live or want to visit during the month of June, there’ll be a Pride celebration of some magnitude – from tiny little parades with traditional rainbow flags to full-blown festivals, carnivales, fair days and dance parties.
One such destination in Australia is Brisbane, the capital of Queensland, where the Queen’s Ball is turning 50 this year. Australia celebrates the Royal Queen’s birthday over a long-weekend in June. Leave it to gay culture to turn it into a big ball.
The Brisbane Pride Festival is very proud to present the 50th Golden Anniversary Queen’s Birthday Ball Awards. This massive milestone in Brisbane’s GLBTI history will be the premier event of the 2011 Pridefest.
Founded by Brisbane’s legendary Dame Sybil Von Thorndyke, the Queen’s Birthday Ball grew from very humble beginnings to be the longest running gay and lesbian event in the world.
To celebrate its golden anniversary, this year’s Queen’s Ball is be held at one of Australia’s most iconic venues, Cloudland in Fortitude Valley, on Sunday June 12th. Starting at 6pm, there will be shows throughout the night from SouthEast Queensland’s best drag performers, including Dame Sybil, a special guest DJ and the presentation of 12 awards for outstanding achievements in the GLBTI community. This party will continue on at the iconic venue, so expect to party the night away in style.
