San Diego's FilmOut, which some consider as one of America's best LGBTQ movie festivals, returns to a physical venue this fall with groundbreaking full-length films and entertaining shorts. There will also be a virtual track containing four additional online offerings.
The festival attracts moviegoers and stars from around the world which usually results in sellout crowds. This year FilmOut will be held from September, 9 through September 12, 2021, at the beautiful San Diego Natural History Museum (THE NAT) and The Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA); both located in San Diego’s historic Balboa Park.
Every year, Program Director Michael McQuiggan and his team choose films that celebrate LGBTQ stories, filmmakers, and their allies. This anniversary is special because theatergoers will get to have an in-person experience after more than a year of social distancing.
FilmOut 2021's opening night film is "Firebird" starring Tom Prior and Oleg Zagorodnii. It's a story set in the Soviet Air Force during the Cold War. Sergey (Prior) is a private who meets Roman (Zagorodnii), a fighter pilot. Together they explore a relationship that may put them in danger with the KGB. This movie is based on a true story.
Other award-winning films from Sundance, SXSW, and Berlin Film Festivals are on the marquee. They will fill out a schedule that includes a variety of independent features and shorts.
The closing night film is a comedy/drama called "Jump, Darling." It stars Cloris Leachman in one of her last roles. Thomas Duplessie plays Russel, a newbie drag queen, who escapes a devastating breakup by visiting his ailing and stubborn elderly grandmother (Leachman) in her country home.
FilmOut has been a part of San Diego's LGBTQ entertainment community for over 20 years. A lot of the films presented often go on to receive awards and other accolades in the industry. If you are planning to travel to San Diego this fall, plan your trip around this four-day festival while seeing the sights, sounds, and beauty in what many people deem "America's Finest City."
The Opening Night Film and Party will take place on Thursday, September 9, 2021 at 7 pm at THE NAT and their Closing Night Film will end the festival on Sunday, September 12, 2021, at 7 pm at MOPA. A Closing Night Dessert Reception will follow after the film.
