When you think of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, arts and culture probably don’t come to mind. But you would be ignoring the fact not only is this city a great way to expose yourself to the arts it’s also a destination filled with food, entertainment, and competitive sports.
Gaycation Travel Show’s Ravi Roth and his beatific smile are on the move again, and this time he is taking us to Eastern Iowa to explore Cedar Rapids, or as it is nicknamed: “The City of Five Seasons.” He talked to us about his trip and even we were surprised at what he discovered.
Be sure to catch his YouTube travelogue every Friday, and keep checking back to Gaycation Magazine for other great destinations for LGBTQ travelers and their allies. For now, read about Ravi’s adventures and start planning your trip.
Also, as a reminder, join Gaycation Magazine at the annual Aequalitas Content Creators Association Conference (ACCAC) on August 23 – 25 2021 in Cedar Rapids. We look forward to meeting you and hearing about all the great places you want to go.
Now, on to Ravi:
Gaycation Magazine: What is one misconception about Cedar Rapids that most people might have?
Ravi Roth: That it is a drive-by city. Cedar Rapids is filled with arts, culture, Queerness, Midwest charm and culinary dreams!
Is there a lot of cultural arts there? Historic sites?
Ravi: Yes! There is the National Czech and Slovak Museum, there’s the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art and even the hotel at Kirkwood has a culinary program (one of the best in the world) literally attached to the hotel. There are super cute Queer-owned tchotchke stores around town, and the Iowa Ceramic Center where you can make awesome pottery.
What kind of food can people expect?
Literally everything – from farm to table, to rustic Italian, to Mexican and everything in between. No matter your budget, you will never run out of options to find in this town.
How should you dress in summer?
The weather changes on a dime – wear tank tops and shorts, bring summery items, have a light jacket and sneakers in case it rains.
What is the best time of year to visit?
There are activities to do throughout the year, but I think you get the most bang for your buck if you go during Spring/Summer so you’re not freezing your butt off!
What is the closest airport?
Eastern Iowa Airport which has top-notch customer service.
What was the funniest thing you did?
I went to the Prairie Patch Farm and led a Pride parade with goats and llamas all around the farm and I drove the tractor giving a full out Midwestern country boy vibe!
