Phuket – An Island Full of Fun and Sun

by Gaycation Magazine

Editor Edmund cruises through Phuket – showing off the wild and the tame of this exotic escape.

Sometimes your soul seeks the warmth and that is exactly what happened to me. After rustling through another Sydney winter, my eyes looked straight at the sun and Thailand called my name! After thoroughly researching and mapping out my destinations, I knew that a Thai adventure would not be complete without a little bit time on the enchanting island of Phuket.

Phi Phi Island

Nestled on the Andaman Sea, Phuket provides the perfect amount of escapism from the daily grind with hidden beaches and far off islands to wild, raucous parties that rage on every night of the week – I prepped myself for the experience and off I went!

I based myself in Patong, which is much more wild than tame, but fun nonetheless. You can literally walk out of your hotel room and into the party. Massage parlours, street vendors, clubs and beaches are all within quick walking distance and your eyes will bulge with so many things going on. One of my favourite experiences through was wandering down to the famous Simon Cabaret, where a plethora of performers put on a stage-show spectacle like no other. Here, you get to see Thailand’s famous ladyboys sing, dance and charm their way across the stage in a truly, unforgettable performance.

Simon Cabaret is an experience not to be missed in Phuket

After a couple of days and night enjoying the hectic pace of Phuket, I decided I needed to slow things down and I took a couple of day tours from the island. The first lead me to the stunning Phi Phi Islands. Used as the backdrop for many famous films, these islands are breathtaking. Warm waters meeting white sands and you feel as if you are miles away from the craziness of Patong when in all actuality, it’s only a 90 minute boat ride across calm waters. My next day trip sent me on an exploration through ocean caves carved into the massive rock formations that dot the Eastern coastline, a visit to the Muslim Village that floats along the sea and the famous James Bond island – where Sean Connery once dashed and darted around for the world-renowned film franchise.

Phuket is just one of those places that you have to see to believe. Beautiful chaos intertwined with the charm of Thai culture makes it truly an unforgettable holiday destination. Which is exactly why, everywhere you go – you hear people exclaim that this is their 3rd, 4th, or even 5th time coming! So, if you need an escape – then quit daydreaming and pack your bags. Phuket is waiting!
